Welcome!

Welcome to eBook Arts, a blog that seeks to track down and reveal some of the innovative ebooks out there. The focus of this project is books produced for tablet readers, whether they are created as "books" using a product such as Apple's iAuthor or developed as a standalone app. But I am also interested in larger artworks that incorporate tablet devices, as well as works that reside somewhere on the line between book and website, book and game, and so on.

The motivation for this blog came out of my failed attempt to surf through the offerings in Apple's iBookstore, where I quickly discovered that it is near impossible to find books other than those by major writers unless you already know what you are looking for. I had been told of a book for sale on is site: the illustrated poetry edition, Caveboy, by Mary Sherman Willis, which was published by Archipelago Press in Charlottesville, VA, using iAuthor. I thought perhaps I would find some other formally interesting books. Alas, it was not to be.

So, I started this a blog with the following goals in mind:

--to help others find works that make creative use of today's eBook technology
--to inspire artists, writers, publishers and readers to contact me with examples
--to write critical appraisals of the works I find most interesting
--to create a working bibliography of these works
--to start a discussion about these works

Please contact me if you have examples to share!
